Known As ‘Female Barack Obama’, Indian-Origin Kamala Harris To Run For President Of US In 2020
Often referred to as the ‘Female Barack Obama’,
Democratic Senator and Indian-origin Kamala Harris plans to run for President of United States of America in 2020 against the current President Donald Trump.
She is already in the race with four women – Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and former housing secretary Julian Castro. This time it will be different and quite interesting to see the results as four women will run for President.
Presently, she is on several panels like Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Judiciary and the Committee on Budget.
“I love my country,” she told ABC’s Good Morning America, adding she would “fight for the best of who we are”.
She was born in 1964 and her mother Shyamala Gopalan was a breast cancer specialist while her father Donald Harris is an Economics professor at Stanford University.
Kamala, after announcing her plans of running for President, posted a picture with her mother saying ‘Thinking of my mother today. She was smart, fierce, and my first campaign staffer – and I dearly wish she was here with us for this moment. Her spirit still drives me to fight for our values.’
Her parents got divorced when she was a 7-year-old. Harris studied Political Science and Economics at Harvard University.
She is a keen debater and completed her law degree from UC Hastings College of Law. With many feathers in her cap, Harris became the first woman and first black person to serve as Chief Law Enforcement Officer of California for two terms (2011-2017). She was also elected the District Attorney of San Francisco.
